Once the 2009 NFL Draft was over, new general manager Scott Pioli did not take any time off. Pioli went right to work revamping the Chiefs' personnel department.
When the smoke cleared in the week after the draft, Pioli sent eight members of the department he inherited out the door, hired five replacements and retained four members of that previous staff.
The big addition for Pioli was hiring Phil Emery as the Chiefs' director of college scouting. Emery comes to the Chiefs after spending the last five years with the Atlanta Falcons. Before that, he put in seven years with the Chicago Bears as a scout.
Ray Farmer was kept as the team's director of pro personnel. Two area scouts were retained as well: former Chiefs wide receiver Willie Davis and Terry Delp. Promoted from the position of assistant in the pro personnel to area scout on the college side was Rod Perry.
Added with the title of regional scout was Jim Nagy, who worked seven years as a scout for the Patriots. He's been on site at Arrowhead Stadium for the last several months working with Pioli and the old staff. And there were two new area scouts added, both with connections to Pioli: Jay Muraco and Pat Sperduto.
Muraco spent the last nine seasons with the Patriots as the college scouting coordinator. He's also worked for the personnel departments with the Chargers, Browns and Eagles. Before moving to New England in 2000 to join Pioli and Bill Belichick in their first year with the team he worked in Philadelphia. Sperduto coached with Pioli back in 1991 at Murray State. He's played and coached in the Arena Football League, his most recent stint was three years as head coach of the Nashville Kats. He's also worked for the Tennessee Titans' personnel department.
It's unlikely that Pioli is done. His staff lacks a healthy dose of pro football personnel experience. He fired scouts that had a combined 129 years of experience, while hiring a group that had just 62 years in pro football.
