It was the kind of game Chiefs watchers were beginning to wonder if they'd see anytime soon, if at all this year.

It was, in short, as close to a complete game as the rebuilding Chiefs could have expected at the first-quarter mark of a difficult season.

Snapping a 12-game losing streak dating back to last season, Kansas City's 33-19 upset of previously unbeaten Denver at Arrowhead Stadium came from critical contributions on offense, special teams and defense.

The defensive contributions are not hard to quantify even on a day when Denver ran up 446 total yards, more than the 432 the Broncos were averaging in three wins when they were No. 1 in scoring (38 points a game) and No. 2 in total offense.

But Kansas City's young defense, playing with eight starters with less than three years' experience, forced four turnovers and made key red-zone stands in the fourth quarter of a tight game in holding the Broncos to field goals when they needed touchdowns.

Kansas City yielded only one second-period touchdown and four field goals, two coming in the final eight minutes after Denver reached second-and-goal at the 3 and first down at the 15.

"Denver's got a good offense, and at times they were passing the ball at will," second-year defender Tank Tyler said. "Coach told us all week they were going to make plays and get in the red zone, but that we had to make plays there and hold them to field goals. We were very successful at that (Sunday)."

The Chiefs defense also helped set up 10 others points -- significant when considering Kansas City was averaging just under 11 points a game in its first three losses -- by giving the offense possession at the Broncos 26 and 2 off turnovers.

Offensively, Larry Johnson rushed for 198 yards and two TDs to lead a ball-control offense that maintained possession for 33 1/2 minutes, essential in keeping the Denver offense off the field.

On special teams, Nick Novak kicked four field goals in five tries, and rookie returner Dantrell Savage returned a kickoff 51 yards to set up a field-goal drive after Denver had closed to 23-16 with 7:58 remaining.

"Those kids deserve a win, and our fans deserve a win, too," coach Herm Edwards said of the Chiefs' first victory in 11 months. "We hadn't won a football game in quite some time. I'd never been through a drought like this. Now we've got to try to build on this win."
