In Wednesday's first media session of the current bye week, coach Herm Edwards was asked which specific areas would get the most attention during this introspective week of self-scout.

"Offensively, the three-and-outs, not consistently driving the ball," he said in beginning the litany. "The run game has sputtered some. No big passes in the passing game.

"Defensively, third down has hurt us. Big plays hurt us, whether runs on third down or passes. We've got to clean that up."

Let's see what that leaves unaddressed. Special teams seem to be doing all right, apparently, expect for the lack of bang in the return game. But, at least Dustin Colquitt is punting well.

Yes, there's plenty of work to do for a young team ranked 29th in total offense and 30th in total defense. Kansas City is second-from-last in scoring, next-to-last in rush defense after giving up 182 ground yards a game, next-to-last in sacks, worst in passing yards per play, next-to-worst in third-down defense ...

The list goes on and on. But before anyone gets accused of being overly negative -- which is hard to resist after last week's 34-0 loss at Carolina when the Chiefs had one of their worst non-strike offensive outputs (127 total yards) in 22 years -- there is some positive news among the statistics.

As Edwards noted, the Chiefs are No. 2 in the league in takeaways with 11 in five games.

That would be real nice, he added sadly, were they not also tied for fourth in giveaways with 10, giving only a plus-1 in turnover differential.

"That's too many in five games," he said of this team's turnovers.

Turning a sinking ship around isn't as easy as changing personnel, either. Edwards said he plans no major personnel changes during the bye week sandbagging operation in which news leaks are developing faster than they can be patched.

"It's a young team, and they've got to continue to play," he said. "When they play, they learn. I think that's the point."

BYE WEEK SCHEDULE: The Chiefs worked on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of their bye week before taking the weekend off. They will return Monday and begin a normal week of preparation for the Tennessee game Oct. 19 at Arrowhead Stadium.
