Kansas City Chiefs Inside Slant 2008-10-14

With the Tuesday NFL trade deadline upon them, the Chiefs seemed intent on shopping around any number of veterans who could bring them draft picks.

No. 1 on the trading block is frustrated tight end Tony Gonzalez, who asked the Chiefs to seek a trade so that the 32-year-old nine-time Pro Bowl player might have another shot at the playoffs before the end of his career.

Gonzalez, remember, has played in only two playoff games (1997 and 2003) but has yet to win one in Kansas City. He has said he intends to play at least next year and possibly beyond, but that he likely will not be around when -- or if -- this current Chiefs rebuilding project bears fruit.

Gonzalez asked the Chiefs to explore a trade with the defending Super Bowl champion Giants, but those talks produced nothing as of Monday evening.

Kansas City reportedly opened talks requesting two draft picks -- second- and fifth-round picks, which the Giants got for trading Jeremy Shockey to New Orleans. The Giants balked at that price and remained reluctant even when Kansas City reportedly asked for a single third-round pick.

Kansas City also reportedly learned of interest from Philadelphia, Green Bay and Buffalo.

Gonzalez, after signing a new five-year, $35 million contract before the 2007 season, was one of Kansas City's most frustrated players during the 12-game losing streak that began with nine losses in 2007 and ended with a Week 4 home upset of Denver. Being an older player for a team rebuilding exclusively with draft picks was not what he'd signed on for, he said.

Gonzalez was especially frustrated when he was just 3 yards short of passing Shannon Sharpe's NFL record for career receiving yardage by a tight end and was not given a shot at one more catch in Kansas City's final possession before family and fans present for the Denver win.

He passed the record with no fanfare on a 6-yard catch -- on a third-and-16 play -- on the road in a 34-0 loss to Carolina that left Gonzalez feeling all but joyless about setting yet another NFL record.

The Chiefs also reportedly are again inquiring about trade interest in running back Larry Johnson, as they've done on and off last spring.

Neither Gonzalez nor Johnson was available Monday when the Chiefs locker room was opened to reporters. Both participated in team meetings and the walkthrough.

Offensive captain Brian Waters, who said he had talked to Gonzalez about his desire to play elsewhere, said the trade speculation would have no effect, even on the preparation of a young team.

"As you get older, you start wanting to be part of a winning team," Waters said. "Some of us have the ability to ask for certain things. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

"The thing about this game is, we're thick-skinned people. We realize Tony Gonzalez is a great player, and if he's still here, we're going to need him to win games.

"It really doesn't affect us as a whole. Right now this is an individual deal between Tony and the organization. Regardless of what happens in the next 24 hours, we've still got to play Tennessee this week. Our focus stays the same.

"Any talk about resentment or any other stuff, that comes from you guys (reporters). We understand the business side of things. It's easy, really, to see both sides of this thing. And if it doesn't work for him, he's got to come back to work and we move on."

Various media reports say the Chiefs also are talking to New England about the prospect of veteran backup quarterback Damon Huard returning to the Patriots. The Chiefs are expected to get third-year starting QB Brodie Croyle back for this week's Tennessee game after he missed the previous four -- three of which Huard started, with one victory -- with a separated shoulder.
