The good news is, running back Larry Johnson looks to be all the way back, and quarterback Brodie Croyle seems to be getting more comfortable with the new power-running, option-passing offense being installed at the Chiefs' Wisconsin training camp.

The bad news is, Kansas City may have lost its two highly touted first-round draft picks for an extended period.

As much as people would like to accentuate the positive, injuries to first-round draft picks Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert provided the biggest news in the Chiefs camp last week.

Albert, the 15th player drafted last April, reinjured the same ankle that caused him to miss the final two weeks of spring workouts during a July 31 joint workout with the Minnesota Vikings. Denied his highly anticipated matchup with NFL sack leader and former Chiefs defensive end Jared Allen -- whom the Vikings did not bring to River Falls in hopes of avoiding a media circus -- Albert was injured after taking only two snaps in which he struggled to handle second-year Minnesota defensive end Brian Robinson.

Coach Herm Edwards described Albert's status as day-to-day, then two nights later downgraded it to week-to-week. Albert likely won't play in the preseason opener in Chicago and could miss the rest of the Wisconsin part of the Chiefs camp.

Dorsey, the highly decorated defensive tackle taken with the fifth overall pick in the draft, was injured two nights later at the team's annual Family Fun Night.

Some fun! Dorsey walked off the field on his own power after sustaining what Edwards called a sprained left knee. That's a different leg from the one that sustained a fracture last year during LSU's march to the BCS national championship.

Dorsey is expected to miss about a week.

Albert's injury put a damper on the Vikings workout in which Johnson's hard running was one of the Chiefs few highlights.

Returning from the fractured foot that caused him to miss the final eight of the Chiefs' nine straight season-ending losses last year, Johnson pronounced himself 100 percent back after breaking some long runs and running through Minnesota rookie safety Tyrell Johnson with a stiff arm.

"It's been a long, long time since I pulled that (stiff-arm) out of my repertoire," Johnson said. "It was fun going against guys at full speed again. I felt good knocking people around and getting guys riled up."

Minnesota got a measure of revenge when several Vikes rode Johnson hard to the ground on a subsequent run in the non-tackling session. That was OK with Johnson too. He'd been looking for a chance to take a shot as well as dish some out as a means of testing his healed foot.

Dorsey's injury on Saturday night ruined an evening when Croyle hit most everything he attempted in 7-on-7 or team sessions. Of course, most of those passes were short and safe, but he was on target and throwing in rhythm, which is exactly what new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has been wanting to see.

Now the Chiefs need to see Croyle lead some sustained marches in whatever time he's given in Thursday's preseason opener against the Bears at Soldier Field.

CAMP CALENDAR: The big social events, the Vikings workout and the Family Fun Night, are over and the true dog days of camp are upon the Chiefs. They get a break this week in tapering off before the Thursday preseason opener in Chicago. They return for another week of workouts before breaking camp on Aug. 15 in advance of their Aug. 16 preseason home game against Arizona.
