Kansas City Chiefs Notes, Quotes 2009-04-17
--The signing of LB Zach Thomas gives the Chiefs a veteran presence in the middle of whatever defensive scheme they choose to run. Thomas has played in both the 4-3 and the 3-4 over his career with Miami and Dallas. Thomas will be 36 in September, the same age as veteran LB Donnie Edwards, who was released. But Thomas played 15 games last year, while Edwards battled injuries and was on the field for only seven games in the '08 season.

--WR Will Franklin became the highest pick from the 2008 NFL Draft to be released when the Chiefs sent him to the waiver wire on April 13. Franklin apparently turned off the new regime by showing up overweight and out of shape for the offseason program. He was claimed by five teams on the waiver wire and was awarded to Detroit.

--PKs Carlos Martinez and Mark Myers will attend the team's veteran minicamp on April 17-18-19 in a tryout basis. Martinez kicked four years in the Arena Football League, while Myers has kicked in the Canadian Football League. The Chiefs still have Connor Barth on the roster. As a rookie last year, Barth hit 10 of 12 FG attempts.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Because we are doing things together, you get to see each other do these things. You get to see what another guy does and that just drives the next guy to match what he did, or do it better. And the next guy sees that and wants to do more. There's no doubt that the competitive side of this is being stressed. You can't help but notice. The whole atmosphere around here is about competing. It's the word you hear most often." -- FS Jarrad Page talking about the team's offseason conditioning program under new head coach Todd Haley.
