--The NFL Draft passed with the Chiefs making only one trade, when they sent TE Tony Gonzalez to the Atlanta Falcons. Two other disgruntled veterans, LG Brian Waters and RB Larry Johnson, were not traded despite asking to be dealt since the first of the year. Johnson has backed off his demand in the last month.
--The Chiefs were busy two days before the draft with the trade of TE Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta for the Falcons second-round choice in 2010. The 10-time Pro Bowler wanted out of Kansas City in hopes of finding a team where he had a chance to win a Super Bowl. GM Scott Pioli said the team was not actively trying to trade Gonzalez, but reacted to an offer from the Falcons.
"We did not seek to trade Tony," Pioli said. "But there was an opportunity that came to us and after a lot of internal discussion in a short time we decided to make the trade. We did what we felt was in the best interest of the Kansas City Chiefs in the short-term and the long-term."
--The Gonzalez trade came a few days after the team held a voluntary veteran minicamp that Gonzalez did not attend. Todd Haley's first practices with the Chiefs saw 64 of the 67 players on the rosters in attendance for all five sessions over three days. The only players missing were Gonzalez, LG Brian Waters and OLB Mike Vrabel. Waters has asked the team to trade him. Haley said he was comfortable with the players absent because they had all been in contact and told him they were going to be absent.
Overall, Haley was pleased with the camp.
"I told the players you are not going to make the team or not make the team this weekend," Haley said. "You have a better chance of making the team lifting and running the way we want it done. They are interested in listening and trying to do things the way we want to do them. That's one of the criteria for being on this team; you are going to have to do it the way you are coached to do it. They are listening and paying attention and doing it the way we are talking about ... we have a long ways to go."
--When the Chiefs went through their minicamp, there were a half-dozen players who did not participate as they continue to rehab from injury.
DE Turk McBride is coming off shoulder surgery and said he was at 80 percent and was allowed to do some of the position work.
CB Maurice Leggett is also coming off a shoulder injury and he did position work as well. Forced the ride the stationary bikes were QB Brodie Croyle (knee), RB Kolby Smith (knee), DT Glenn Dorsey (shin), DE Alfonso Boone (unknown) and DT T.J. Turner (knee).
--In their minicamp, the Chiefs allowed only minimal viewing by the media and nothing during team work, so there was no look at their new defense under coordinator Clancy Pendergast. They plan to play the hybrid 4-3/3-4 system that Pendergast ran last year with the Arizona Cardinals. Working with the outside linebackers during the minicamp were defensive ends Tamba Hali, Turk McBride and Andy Studebaker.
--The Chiefs worked out a pair of kickers: Carlos Martinez and Mark Myers at the recent minicamp. Martinez has four years of experience in the Arena League and Myers kicked for several games in the Canadian Football League. Neither Martinez nor Myers was signed after the camp and Haley said the team was still evaluating the position.
--With the trade of Gonzalez, the Chiefs signed a pair of journeymen tight ends, Sean Ryan (San Francisco) and Tony Curtis (Dallas). Head coach Todd Haley was familiar with both players, since they came into the league through Dallas when Haley was an assistant coach on Bill Parcells' staff with the Cowboys. On the roster, Ryan and Curtis join '08 third-round draft choice Brad Cottam and TE/FB Jed Collins, a first-year player out of Washington State. Last year, Cottam played in all 16 games, catching just seven passes for 63 yards.
--The NFL Network reported just before the start of the draft that the Chiefs and QB Matt Cassel had come to an agreement on a contract extension for six years at $36 million guaranteed.
However, that was news to GM Scott Pioli.
"Someone had told me that that report is out there," Pioli said. "But that's news to me."
--A pair of Chiefs restricted free agents -- WR Jeff Webb and C Rudy Niswanger -- signed their contract tender offers for the 2009 season.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I had the great opportunity of learning from a guy like Tom Brady, who is a professional in every sense of the word, a guy that I look up to and still talk to on a weekly basis. As a young quarterback, he taught me how to be a professional and a starting quarterback in this NFL. He's a guy that never took it for granted. That's something I take with me as I move on in my career away from the Patriots and here with the Chiefs." -- Chiefs QB Matt Cassel.
