--Although he did not play in the 3-4 defense at LSU, the Chiefs view first-round pick Tyson Jackson as a cornerstone at that position for the switch to the scheme. That's fine with Jackson.
"I consider myself a complete football player, so either a 4-3 or a 3-4," Jackson said. "I can always get used to that 3-4 and get adjusted to it. Once I learn the playbook it is on. It is nothing but football."
Jackson had 18.5 sacks in 53 games at LSU and some draft analysts questioned his ability to get to the passer.
"I know they put out there that I have trouble rushing the passer," Jackson said. "But I ranked as one of the best in sacks at LSU. I do my fair share of rushing the passer. If I am not getting double-teamed or chipped by the running back, I pull my weight. I am going to do my very best every snap to put pressure on the quarterback."
--Mr. Irrelevant will get a chance to make the Chiefs roster, as PK Ryan Succop will join the team for its rookie mini-camp on May 8-10 in Kansas City. Succop was the last player selected in the 2009 NFL Draft, a distinction that brings the title of Mr. Irrelevant and a weekend of festivities in Newport Beach, California in June.
The Chiefs' choice came down to the kicker or CB Londen Fryar of Western Michigan, a son of former NFL wide receiver Irving Fryar. They selected Succop and signed Fryar as a free agent. Succop handled field goals, kickoffs and punted for two years for the Gamecocks. The only experienced kicker on the Chiefs roster is Connor Barth, who last year worked in the team's last 10 games and made 10 of 12 field-goal attempts.
--Fifth-round draft choice OT Colin Brown will have the experience not only of trying to make a place for himself in the NFL, but doing it with the team he's followed since childhood. Brown was born and raised in Braymer, Missouri, which is about an hour north of Kansas City.
"This is a dream come true," Brown said from his family's home in Braymer. "Everybody up in this area is a Chiefs fan. To be able to be right here staying at home and playing for the Chiefs is unbelievable, a dream come true."
Brown has been in the stands at Arrowhead Stadium for games back when
he was in junior high and he dreamed then about running through the stadium tunnel onto the field wearing a red jersey.
"I remember watching the great entrances they have and thinking of cool it would be to get to do that," Brown said. "I think it will be an awesome feeling."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "Winning a championship is one thing I've always based all of my careers off of. I always say I want to leave my career winning a championship. My high school career it was my senior year. My college career it was my junior year. So in the NFL, I can't exactly say when it's going to be but I can guarantee it's going to be within my career some time. I'm definitely going to win the Super Bowl." --First-round pick DE Tyson Jackson.
