Kansas City Chiefs Notes, Quotes 2009-05-08
--As the Chiefs' new coaching staff tries to get a handle on what it inherited, experimentation is the norm, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Fourth-year DE Tamba Hali is getting time at both defensive end and outside linebacker.

"They're trying me at different spots, but I've got to think (linebacker) is probably where they'll want me," Hali said. "(Todd) Haley's telling me both defensive end and linebacker, so I'm moving between both of them now. I can rush the passer and play the run while I'm playing linebacker. That's basically what I did at Penn State, so I'm excited about that."

Hali has played the last two seasons between 270 and 280 pounds, but plans to drop weight.

"I don't really need to be 275 pounds. I don't even need to be 260," Hali said. "Maybe I can be 250, like James Harrison or Shawne Merriman. I'm more comfortable at that weight anyway. Right now, we're looking for speed."

--Chiefs chairman of the board Clark Hunt made the decision back in January to hire Scott Pioli as his GM, replacing part of the duties once handled by Carl Peterson. At 100 days into Pioli's stewardship of his family's football investment, Hunt is happy with his decision. He was especially pleased with what he saw go down during the NFL Draft, as Pioli ran his first draft room in Kansas City.

"I was very impressed with how things went," Hunt told the Kansas City Star. "Certainly, the preparation was very thorough. It was evident to me that Scott personally had spent many, many hours studying tape on not only everybody we picked but a lot of people we weren't able to pick. That was his reputation. He's been a GM willing to roll up his sleeves and do the work himself. I know specifically on Tyson Jackson, he spent hours studying the tape trying to make a decision whether he was the right player. I could tell during the week he was starting to lean toward Tyson based on his film review. That coupled with the fact the player will come in and really help the team transition to the 3-4, pushed him over the top."

--C Eric Ghiaciuc's signing should make for an interesting competition for the job at starting center with Rudy Niswanger. Ghiaciuc spent the last three years as the Bengals' starting center, opening 41 games, including all 16 last season. The 6-4, 303-pound Michigan native enters his fifth season and will be 28 years old at the end of May. Niswanger is entering his fourth season and will be 27 in November. He's 6-5, 301 pounds and started all 16 games for the team last year at center.

--Like the other seven original franchises from the American Football League, the Chiefs will honor the 50th season of the league by wearing throwback uniforms for three games during the 2009 schedule. The Chiefs will wear the uniforms of the 1962 AFL champion Dallas Texans, including helmets with the state of Texas on the side. Those uniforms will debut on Oct. 11, when the Chiefs host the Dallas Cowboys at Arrowhead Stadium. They'll wear them again two weeks later against San Diego and then on Nov. 15 against the Raiders in Oakland.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Just because you have money in your pocket doesn't mean you have to spend it. No matter how much money you have, spend it wisely. We are not so much concerned about the sizzle as we are the substance. Just because a player has a marquee name or a marquee reputation doesn't necessarily mean that the player is a good player." -- Scott Pioli talking about the Chiefs' approach to free agency.
