--Not that Joe the Plumber or any other casual NFL follower didn't already know it, but the Chiefs' 32nd-ranked run defense is now officially in the toilet.
"It's been horrible," safety Bernard Pollard said. "We've had two teams run on us for 300 yards this year. That's piss poor."
Kansas City fortified its pipe-wrench grip on the NFL's No. 32 ranking in rushing defense by giving up 332 ground yards -- a team record for futility -- in last week's 34-10 flushing at the hands of unbeaten Tennessee.
"I can't put it on anybody else, because I missed two tackles myself," added Pollard, who might generously halve his total. "I won't say we're lacking in anything. But are we piss poor in some areas? Yes, we are."
--Herm Edwards, asked this week if his two rookie corners, Brandon Flowers and Brandon Carr, might be in awe when facing future Hall of Famer Brett Favre of the Jets for the first time:
"Our two corners have never seen him before except on television, now they get to play against him," Edwards said. "I'm pretty sure he's licking his chops. I told them it's okay if you tackle him, it's okay if you intercept a pass, he won't get mad at you. We'll see what happens."
--The Chiefs also worked out former Tampa Bay QB Bruce Gradkowski and talked with former Oakland and Minnesota QB Daunte Culpepper before signing Quinn Gray as their No. 3 QB this week. Nothing with Culpepper has advanced beyond the talking stage, however, as he has not worked out for the club and may, in fact, not be in physical condition to do so.
BY THE NUMBERS: 61 -- Consecutive points Kansas City gave up over the previous 7 2/3 quarters before finally getting 10 points in the final five minutes of their 34-10 loss last week to Tennessee.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I feel like I've got a personal wing in the hospital for all the surgeries I've had there." -- QB Brodie Croyle, as he prepared for yet another knee surgery with noted Birmingham orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews.
