--Coach Herm Edwards on his radio show Monday night indicated that Daunte Culpepper "wants to go in another direction,'' and said the Chiefs would play their hand with the current quarterbacks on their active roster - Thigpen, Ingle Martin and just-signed former Jacksonville backup Quinn Gray.
--Edwards knew he was being second-guessed upon fielding questions after the Jets game about why he called three running plays - on a day when his team was playing again without Larry Johnson and had been throwing the ball effectively - when trying to kill clock with a 24-21 lead and 5:20 available.
The Chiefs ran Kolby Smith three times for nine yards and had to punt. When Leon Washington returned the punt 37 yards to the Chiefs 46, Brett Favre had three minutes in which to drive for the winning TD.
"We felt we could run the ball and take time off the clock,'' Edwards said. "We were pinned back (at their 20) and we didn't want to throw the ball. If you throw it and don't complete it, you stop the clock and people say, 'Why are you throwing the ball at the end?' "
--The game had other "what-if'' implications for the Chiefs.
Among them was an interception and a possible TD return that LB Derrick Johnson should have had but couldn't hold on the drive for a third-period Jets touchdown.
"If we get that interception,'' Edwards said, "maybe it's a different game.''
