After seeing last year's "Hard Knocks" video of former LSU teammate Dwayne Bowe being duct-taped to a goal post upon arriving a week late for his first rookie camp with the Chiefs, Glenn Dorsey half-expected a similar reception when he checked into his first Chiefs camp two days late.
"There are a lot of big strong guys here. I wouldn't put it past anybody," the powerful 297-pound defensive tackle said after signing a six-year deal worth $51 million with a reported $23 million in guaranteed money.
"It's a rite of passage," he added of the anticipated hazing. "Whatever's going to happen is going to happen, and I'll just try to enjoy it."
But Dorsey got no such treatment from his teammates. Maybe it's because defensive tackles are harder to corral and humiliate than are wide receivers.
"I don't think Dwayne's gonna get me," Dorsey said. "He might catch me, but I'm gonna fight him."
It's more likely that Dorsey's teammates realized he really hadn't missed anything. Two of the three practices he didn't attend were essentially indoor walkthroughs. He did miss the fully padded Saturday morning practice before showing up Saturday afternoon.
-- The Chiefs hadn't intended to do two indoor practices at walk-though pace on Friday, their first day of workouts.
Coach Herm Edwards had scheduled a light, re-familiarization walk-through for the morning workout. When that was moved inside by light rain, it was no big deal.
But the Friday afternoon workout in shells was only 40 minutes old when dark, low-hanging clouds showing apparent rotation started moving in on River Falls. When the tornado sirens sounded, the Chiefs fled indoors for safety. When the 50 mph winds knocked out power to the building, the indoor portion of the workout was delayed another 20 minutes before power was restored.
"You know there are things you can't control," Edwards reasoned. "When there are lightning bolts and that wind starts blowing, there's a guy I believe in who is saying, 'You're not going today.' So, we go tomorrow.
"When you have this many young guys, it's probably a blessing in disguise," Edwards added. "They were able to go through a full practice script at walkthrough mode for a second time, and that should help when we practice in pads."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "The meeting is in 36 minutes. Don't be late." -- Chiefs defensive line coach Tim Krumie as he walked past Glenn Dorsey's signing day press conference.
