Kansas City Chiefs Notes, Quotes 2008-10-30
--Coach Herm Edwards' unhappiness with Larry Johnson has reached the point -- following the filing of two simple assault charges against the running back in the past three weeks -- that he seems immune to using Johnson even in emergency situations.

Asked Wednesday if Johnson might play should No. 2 RB Kolby Smith become injured and limping No. 3 man Jamaal Charles not be available, Edwards said only, "We still have Battle available."

That would be practice-squad player Jackie Battle, who played some last year when Johnson was down.

If Charles can't play against Tampa Bay on his injured ankle, rookie kick returner Dantrell Savage would be pressed into action in the backfield.

Johnson practiced with the team Wednesday following his Tuesday meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in New York.

Asked if Johnson's practicing meant his playing status with the Chiefs had changed, Edwards shook his head and said only, "There's still a lot to be done."

--While pleased that Tyler Thigpen was able to compile a 110.9 passer rating -- the highest for the Chiefs this year -- against the Jets last week, Edwards says the acid test for Thigpen will come this week against the Buccaneers, who are second in scoring defense allowing opponents only 15 points a game.

"This will be a real challenge for him," Edwards said. "This is a team that's built on defense, and has been since 1996. You have to be real careful where you throw the ball because these guys react so well. They really get after a quarterback, and they're very, very fast. They really close on the football, and if you're not dead-on perfect, it can go the other way."

--Edwards, for the record, was a member of Tony Dungy's defensive staff when the Bucs began a turnaround in the mid-1990s. He has always retained a strong appreciation for what the Buccaneers defense, as preached by defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is all about.

"They're back to playing Buc Ball, as we called it. They don't give up a lot of big plays, big runs or big passes. It's probably one of the best defenses we'll play all year. Tennessee was very good and these guys are right up there with Tennessee."

BY THE NUMBERS: 21-5 -- Kansas City's record against NFC opponents at Arrowhead since 1995. The Chiefs have won nine of their last 12 home games against AFC East opponents.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Let's not anoint him, now. Let's not put too much pressure on him. He came from a game in Atlanta (where he threw three interceptions) where everyone's going, 'Whoa, whoa!' to one where he plays well. He just has to keep playing and growing and staying healthy. That's the best thing that can happen to our offense." -- Coach Herm Edwards, on Tyler Thigpen preparing for just his third NFL start against Tampa Bay.
