Kansas City Chiefs Notes, Quotes 2008-11-21
--Wednesday was the 30th anniversary of the most famous play of Herm Edwards' playing career -- the Miracle at the Meadowlands, the play in which the Giants fumbled while needing only to kill out the clock. Edwards' recovery and stunning touchdown return instantly turned the Philadelphia Eagles from loser to winner, and not just in that one game.

It was the kind of franchise fortune-changing play Edwards wishes his young, struggling Chiefs could experience after losing three of their last four games on plays made in the final minute of regulation or overtime.

"We went through a lot of this when Dick (Vermeil) first took over," Edwards remembered of his early days with the Eagles. "We lost a lot of close games, then one year -- 30 years ago today -- we win the fumble game we had no business winning.

"After that, we got it going. I remember it like it was yesterday, but we took off as a football team after that game. We made it to the playoffs (in 1978), and eventually to the Super Bowl (after the 1980 season).

"I really believe that when that kind of thing happens to this team, they'll figure it out. It happened for us in Tampa, it's happened everywhere I've been when you're trying to rebuild a team.

"Really, can you imagine how these guys would feel if we'd made the two-point conversions in San Diego (a 20-19 loss decided on a two-point PAT gamble with 23 seconds left). Or if we stop (Brett Favre and the Jets) on that final drive in New York, or stop Tampa Bay on their (game-tying) two-point conversion. We're just off a couple plays here or there."

--Bills linebacker Kawika Mitchell, the Chiefs' second-round draft pick in 2003, is too classy to gloat about the circumstances that led to him playing on a Super Bowl champion with the Giants last season after the Chiefs' declined to sign him as a unrestricted free agent following the 2007 season.

"Obviously it worked out well that I was able to go contribute to a team that won the championship," Mitchell told Kansas City reporters this week.

"I have no hard feelings. It will be fun to come back to Kansas City where I got my first opportunity, where the fans were always good to me. It's a place I called home for four years."

But won't there be at least some temptation to gloat?

"I thought about that, but I'll just play it smart," Mitchell replied. "That doesn't mean I won't have my big, shiny (Super Bowl) ring on when I come to town. But I won't rub it in.

"This is a business, and they made a business decision. But obviously mine worked out better."

--Edwards, on the Chiefs' inability to retain Mitchell: "You'd like to keep all your good players, but in reality, that doesn't happen in this league. You lose some and you have to adjust.

"I learned that a long time ago when I was little kid (growing up in the San Francisco area) when the Giants traded Willie Mays. I thought, 'You can't trade Willie Mays!' but they did. I learned that if you can trade Willie Mays, anything can happen."

BY THE NUMBERS: 10 of 11 -- The home team's edge in the last 11 games of this Chiefs-Bills series. The exception was in 2000 when Buffalo won 21-17 at Arrowhead.

6 -- Sacks recorded by the Chiefs this year.

13 -- The NFL record for least sacks in a season, Baltimore, 1981.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "They'll be excited about playing us. Why shouldn't they? They'll look at us, look at our record and say, 'Hey, we should beat these guys.'" -- Herm Edwards, on what he perceives the Bills' mindset to be coming into Kansas City.
