Kansas City Chiefs Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--Kansas City set league and franchise defensive records for futility in the 2-14 season, which topped the team's previous worst year (2-12 in 1977).

In getting only one sack against Cincinnati, which entered the game No. 3 in sacks allowed, the Chiefs ran their season sack count to a mere 10. The franchise that in the 1990s had one of the league's most feared pass rushers when Derrick Thomas and Neil Smith played together set an NFL record this season for the worst pass rush. Baltimore recorded only 11 sacks in the nine-game, strike-shortened season of 1982 after getting only 13 in the 16-game 1981 campaign.

The Chiefs record for fewest sacks in a 16-game season was 23 in 1988, the year before Carl Peterson's arrived as president/general manager and made Thomas his first overall draft pick.

Kansas City's defense also yielded 6,291 total yards this year, the most in franchise history.

--RB Larry Johnson, who rushed for only 18 yards on 10 carries against Cincinnati, on why he thinks his days in Kansas City are over: "I've been through a lot being in this city, and there are certain things you feel, certain things you just can't get corrected. You take your losses and you move on."

Johnson missed four games this year -- three on a club-imposed disciplinary action, and one on a league suspension following two off-field incidents involving alleged confrontations with women in nightclubs.

"The city is tired of me, and the organization and I have run our course together," he said.

Johnson had three 100-yard rushing games, including a 198-yarder in the Week 4 upset of previously unbeaten Denver. But when Johnson returned from his suspension, the Chiefs offense had changed from the power game built around his ability to a semi-spread offense designed to accommodate the skills of new QB Tyler Thigpen, a spread quarterback in college.

Johnson's biggest games upon returning were for 92 yards in a win at Oakland, and 108 yards in a Week 16 loss to Miami.

"They did what they had to do," Johnson said. "I understand that. They moved on. It's time for me to move on."

Asked to summarize his chances of playing for the Chiefs in 2009, Johnson said: "Slim and none."
