--On a vote by their teammates, TE Tony Gonzalez and CB Maurice Leggett were named the Chiefs' player of the year and rookie of the year, respectively.
Gonzalez's 96 receptions, the third-highest total in his career, ranked fourth among all NFL receivers. It was his second consecutive season with more than 90. He finished 12th among all receivers in yardage (1,058).
Leggett, an undrafted player out of Division II Valdosta State, came out of a rookie tryout camp and quickly won a place as the team's nickel back following an early-season injury to veteran Pat Surtain. He played in 12 games and made an impact with return touchdowns on special teams and defense in back-to-back games.
--For the second time in recent weeks, coach Herm Edwards declined the opportunity to lobby for himself when asked what case for his retention he might make to his prospective new boss.
"Maybe it's my upbringing, but I'm not one to try and build cases," he said at his wrap-up press conference. "I let my work speak for itself, that's the bottom line. I'm not big on promoting Herman Edwards, never have been, and I'm not going to start now. I've been in this business too long. I think I try to do things the right way and try to do things right for this organization."
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm pretty sure the new GM is going to know who I am -- unless he's not in America. I've been in this league 30 years. He's got to look at that and say, 'Is this guy the right guy?' And if he says I'm not, I'm OK with that." -- Herm Edwards.
