Kansas City Chiefs Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-02

Kansas City Chiefs Strategy and Personnel 2009-03-02
Coach Todd Haley has made some coaching assignments on the offensive side, though defensive responsibilities -- including that of defensive coordinator -- remain undetermined.

Haley confirmed the Chan Gailey, the offensive coordinator last year under deposed coach Herm Edwards, will retain that job on the new staff. But Haley still hasn't decided if he or Gailey will call plays.

Other assignments include Bill Muir and holdover Joe D'Alessandris on the offensive line, holdover Bob Bicknell will coach tight ends, with newcomers Maurice Carthon the running backs, Dedric Ward the wide receivers and Steve Hoffman the special teams.

Haley has two former defensive coordinators on his staff in Clancy Pendergrass (Arizona) and Gary Gibbs (New Orleans), but he has not decided whether either of the two will serve as coordinator with his first Chiefs staff.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

The Chiefs all but completely ignored free agency last year, choosing instead to rebuild through the draft. The result of that decision was the acquisition of young talent - eight first-year players were starters or heavy contributors through much of 2008 campaign - but also the departures of long-time team president/general manager Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards.

It also left the Chiefs with some $35 million in cap room. How much of that cushion Pioli is allowed to spend, and where he spends it, will be the key in the revitalization of the Chiefs, a team with gaping holes across the board.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Pass rusher: After setting an NFL record for sack futility with only 10 sacks in 2008, the Chiefs desperately need people to pressure the quarterback. Finding at least two rushers in free agency or the draft is a top priority. Newly-acquired LB Mike Vrabel was a step in the right direction.

2. Receivers: Tight end Tony Gonzalez remains the team's only consistent receiving threat, and he would rather be traded to a contender. Kansas City has to find someone to provide a threat on the side away from Dwayne Bowe.

FRANCHISE PLAYER: None.

TRANSITION PLAYER: None.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--DE Jason Babin, had two of the team's mere 10 sacks and showed enough upside as midseason acquisition to deserve consideration.

--LB Rocky Boiman, played well at several different positions after joining team early in the season and could be asked back for the right price.

--S Oliver Celestin, special team player came off the street at midseason, and likely will return to job market.

--G Adrian Jones, team's starting right guard likely remains in the team's picture, but the Chiefs want an upgrade at the position, so he won't command a high price.

--S Jon McGraw, special teams captain could have a place with a new staff.

--LB Patrick Thomas, won the MLB spot almost by default, but wasn't playing that well at time of season-ending injury and likely will not figure prominently in plans for the future.

RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

--C Rudy Niswanger (tendered at $1.545M with second-round pick as compensation) is the team's starting center and figures strongly in team plans at either center or guard.

--CB Jarrad Page (tendered at $1.545M with second-round pick as compensation) is the team's starting free safety.

--WR Jeff Webb (tendered at $1.01M with sixth-round pick as compensation) was a Herm Edwards favorite, but hasn't shown much in two years.

EXCLUSIVE RIGHTS FREE AGENTS: Unknown.
