Former Miami and Cleveland cornerback Travis Daniels, who played three seasons in Miami and the 2008 campaign with Cleveland, is the Chiefs first significant signing on an unrestricted free agent.
Daniels, who has played in 51 games with 26 starts, has three career interceptions and two fumbles recovered. A fourth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2005, he was a starter as a rookie, but became primarily a nickel back and eventually a backup. He is considered to be stronger in run defense than pass coverage.
The Chiefs also have signed two players who spent time on New England's practice squad: WR C.J. Jones and LB Darrell Robertson, who played for Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey at Georgia Tech.
TEAM NEEDS
1. Pass rushers/linebackers: Getting Mike Vrabel in the Cassel trade with New England is a big help, especially if the Chiefs make the transition to the 3-4 defense most people are expecting. But they still lack pass rushers, both on the defensive line and the linebacking corps, and likely will be looking hardest at linebackers with pass rushing upside. Aaron Curry becomes a strong candidate for the Chiefs' No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
2. Offensive line: Brian Waters' recent suggestion that he wouldn't mind moving on likely will be ignored by management, as the Chiefs are in real trouble if he leaves. Waters is a dependable force on the right side, especially given that the club wants to upgrade at right tackle. It's a position the club will be looking at strongly should Aaron Curry, the best defensive player in the draft, be gone when the Chiefs go on the clock with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
3. Receivers: Having eliminated a team need at quarterback with the acquisition of young starter Matt Cassel from New England, Kansas City's most pressing need on offense now is in the receiving corps. Always dependable TE Tony Gonzalez continues to express interest in moving on, and third-year man Dwayne Bowe is the only other consistent receiving threat. A top-notch receiver will likely be there at No. 3 should the Chiefs think Michael Crabtree is worthy of such a selection.
