PLAYER NOTES

--DE Turk McBride opened the Arizona game as the starting left defensive end and was credited with two sacks despite playing with a sore hamstring. He seems to have replaced veteran Alfonso Boone at the starting position.

--DT Glenn Dorsey, the Chiefs' No. 1 draft pick, saw his first action of the preseason after tweaking his knee Aug. 2 and missing the first preseason game. Dorsey, who played in only one series as planned, predicts he'll be at full speed for the Sept. 7 season opener.

--K Connor Barth, an undrafted rookie, didn't help his roster chances by missing a 46-yard field goal that bounced off the right upright in the fourth quarter against Arizona. The Chiefs trailed 20-9 at the time, but coach Herm Edwards detests fourth-quarter misses.

--WR Bobby Sippio was on the thin side of the wide receiver bubble anyway, but his play against the Cardinals may have sealed the fate of the former Arena League legend with a large fan base. Sippio dropped a potential touchdown pass in mop-up time, then saw a pass go through his hands for an interception that was returned 84 yards for a TD.

--T Herb Taylor drew generally high marks for his second consecutive start at left tackle for the injured Branden Albert. "He's doing OK. He's not the broken spoke on the wheel," insisted coach Herm Edwards.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: DE Turk McBride -- After a disappointing rookie season, McBride showed enough in his second training camp to merit an elevation to starting left defensive end. The Chiefs had asked career tackle Alfonso Boone to make the transition to end, but McBride is the more natural candidate. He was finally starting to generate pressure from edge pass rush in camp, and he followed that up with two sacks, two hurries and a forced fumble against Arizona.

BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Kicker. It's still undecided between young vet Nick Novak, who has played 16 games over two seasons with two different teams, and undrafted rookie Connor Barth. The North Carolina rookie didn't help himself with a 46-yard fourth-quarter miss after hitting from 35 in the second quarter. Novak converted two tries from 32 and 40, but then whiffed badly on the ensuing kickoff when Arizona's J.J. Arrington raced right past him in returning a kick from two yards deep in the end zone. Novak seems to have the better leg strength, which may tip the battle in his favor.

OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: Backup quarterback. Damon Huard didn't even play against Arizona, which seems to suggest that second-year man Tyler Thigpen is the Chiefs' choice as Brodie Croyle's backup. Thigpen is a rollout pass/scrambler who can make plays with his feet, as evidenced by his 35 rushing yards on five scrambles. The Chiefs worry that he'll eventually get clobbered on one of those scurries. Huard remains very much in the picture, even as he moves to the back row.

ROOKIE REPORT: DT Glenn Dorsey played in his first game against Arizona, but got little chance to show anything in one series. He reported his sore knee is healing nicely. ... LT Branden Albert sounded more hopeful than confident when he said he hoped to be ready for the Sept. 7 season opener. He's still wearing a walking boot after his July 31 foot injury, and there is no accurate timetable for his return. ... Second-round DB Brandon Flowers had more losses than wins against Arizona, but he battled gamely with Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin. ... RB Jamaal Charles did not play against Arizona because of a sore shoulder. ... TE Brad Cottam left the Arizona game early with a shoulder injury after catching a pass for five yards. ... WR Will Franklin had one catch for six yards against Arizona as he continues to play with the first unit in three-wideout sets, which the Chiefs used more often against Arizona. ... CB Brandon Carr, a fifth-round pick from Division II Grand Valley State, had a potential interception go off his hands in the first half against Arizona. He later lost contact and let a short pass go for a long gain. ... Sixth-round WR/KR Kevin Robinson still has not practiced while recovering from offseason surgery and is starting to look like a candidate for the PUP list. ... TE Michael Merritt, Kansas City's round 7-b draft pick from Central Florida, remains unsigned while awaiting post-surgical medical clearance to play. ... Undrafted FB Mike Cox did not start against Arizona (Chris Manderino did), but he got most of the snaps following the second possession and looks to have the inside track on the starting job.

INJURY REPORT: Missing the Arizona game with injuries were starting LB Donnie Edwards (hamstring), LB Napoleon Harris (knee), rookie T Branden Albert (foot), S Jon McGraw (shoulder), rookie RB Jamaal Charles (shoulder), DE Trevor Johnson (head injury) and rookie DE Brian Johnston.
