Kansas City Chiefs Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-10

Kansas City Chiefs Strategy and Personnel 2009-04-10
The Chiefs have turned to the Arena League and a small-school Kansas setting for their most recent player acquisitions.

They signed receiver Rodney Wright, who was on Buffalo's practice squad in 2002 and '03 before playing four seasons for the San Jose Sabercats (2005-08) in the Arena League.

Newly signed long snapper Tanner Purdum was a long snapper and quarterback at Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan., not far from Kansas City. He spent the 2008 season as a graduate assistant working with wide receivers at his alma mater.

TEAM NEEDS/OFFSEASON STRATEGY

Kansas City picked up yet another 30-something veteran in signing 33-year-old former San Diego and Cincinnati guard Mike Goff.

Goff, despite playing with injuries last year with the Chargers, has a string of 106 consecutive starts dating back to the 2002 season with Cincinnati.

He will become an immediate candidate for the starting right guard position, which Adrian Jones played last year. Jones is an unrestricted free agent who remains unsigned.

Goff also can provide depth at center.

TEAM NEEDS

1. Pass rushers/linebackers. The Chiefs have helped their linebacker corps with the acquisitions of Mike Vrabel from the Patriots and Monte Beisel from Arizona, but they still lack the impact backers necessary to make the transition to the 3-4 defense. They especially lack pass rushers, both on the defensive line and the linebacking corps, and likely will be looking hardest at linebackers with pass rushing upside. Aaron Curry becomes a strong candidate for the Chiefs' No. 3 overall pick in the draft.

2. The whispers coming from Tony Gonzalez's camp last week, suggestions that the nine-time Pro Bowl receiver wouldn't mind being traded if a good deal was available, further highlight the thin situation in the Chiefs receiving corps. The free agent acquisition of Bobby Engram from Seattle helps, but Engram is 36 and is in the last year or two of his career. The Chiefs hope he can help tutor Dwayne Bowe, whose 2008 drops may be the result of a concentration issue. But the Chiefs still need a long-term upgrade at the position. A top-notch receiver will likely be there at Kansas City's No. 3 draft spot. Now, will the Chiefs think Michael Crabtree is worthy of such a selection?

3. Offensive line. The addition of veteran G Mike Goff fills a potential void at right guard, where incumbent Adrian Jones remains a free agent. He might still have a place here, but that spot is now tenuous with Goff's addition. The Chiefs will be in real trouble, however, if Brian Waters follows through on his recent suggestion that he would like to move on. The club's new wouldn't management should ignore that request and repair the bridge with a respected team leader. But the Chiefs still could use a new right tackle, as Damian McIntosh continues to battle injuries, and they need depth. The offensive line is a position the club will be looking at strongly should Aaron Curry, the best defensive player in the draft, be gone when the Chiefs go on the clock with the No. 3 overall pick in the draft.
