The Chiefs all but finalized the signing of their 12-man draft class in the five days leading up to their July 24 departure for River Falls, Wis.
Third-round picks Jamaal Charles, a running back, and TE Brad Cottam signed on Monday. CB Brandon Flowers, a second-rounder taken with the 35overall pick, signed on Wednesday. And Branden Albert, the Virginia guard drafted with the 15th pick, signed a five-year deal Thursday morning in time to catch the Chiefs' charter to the Twin Cities.
DT Glenn Dorsey arrived officially on Day 3 of camp after agreeing to a six-year deal (with one voidable season) worth a reported $51 million with $23 million guaranteed.
Kansas City still has one unsigned draft pick. TE Michael Merritt, a seventh-round pick, is recovering from offseason surgery and will not be signed until he is medically cleared to play.
PLAYER PERSONNEL NOTES
-- DT Glenn Dorsey immediately moved into a starting defensive tackle spot, replacing second-year man Tank Tyler, in his first practice after signing his contract on July 26.
-- CB Brandon Flowers, as he did throughout the spring, is working in the RCB spot vacated by veteran Ty Law.
-- CB Brandon Carr, the fifth-round draft pick out of Division 2 Grand Valley State, looks to have the inside track for nickel back spot, covering an outside receiver.
-- DE Brian Johnston, a seventh-round pick out of 1-AA Gardner Webb, was getting some first-team snaps in the nickel early in camp.
-- K Connor Barth, an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina, converted three of four kicks, missing his first from 38 yards, in the first place-kicking session of camp. His competition, young vet Nick Novak, also missed his first kick of four.
-- FB Mike Cox, an undrafted rookie from Georgia Tech, has been getting first-team snaps when offensive coordinator Chan Gailey (ex-Georgia Tech) plays a two-back set with Larry Johnson.
BATTLE OF THE WEEK: Incumbent Napoleon Harris and young vet Pat Thomas at middle linebacker. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who now also coaches KC's linebackers, didn't get all he wanted from Harris, especially when dropping into the deep middle zone in the Cover Two, last year in Harris' first season with the Chiefs. Thomas is getting a lot of first-team snaps early in camp. This could be more than a wakeup call for Harris.
OTHER BATTLE FRONTS: The No. 2 wide receiver spot opposite Dwayne Bowe. Devard Darling has the early lead, but rookie Will Franklin will mount a challenge. The Chiefs don't appear close to picking a kicker between undrafted rookie Connor Barth and Nick Novak.
ROOKIE REPORT: DT Glenn Dorsey got schooled in his first workout by three-time Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters, who remains complimentary about Dorsey's potential. ... LT Brendan Albert held his own in preliminary fully padded one-on-one drills with new RDE Tamba Hali. ... CB Brandon Flowers had tight coverage on Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez only to lose the play on a circus catch, a Gonzo specialty. ... RB Jamaal Charles, pushing for the backup spot with Kolby Smith and Jackie Battle, had a costly fumble in one of his first team sessions. ... TE Brad Cottam continues to be a starter (with Gonzalez) in Gailey's twin tight end packages. ... WR Will Franklin is a leading candidate to play in three-wideout packages. ... CB Brandon Carr, a fifth-round pick, will cover outside receivers in the first-team nickel unless a young vet like Tyron Brackenridge steps up. ... Seventh-round pick Brian Johnston is the second team DE who has been getting some work in the first-team nickel.
INJURY REPORT: WR Kevin Robinson, a sixth-round pick who was expected to contend for return duties, has yet to work while recovering from offseason cleanup surgery. He hopes to be on the practice field sometime this week.
