PLAYER NOTES

--RB Larry Johnson's 198-yard, two-touchdown game against Denver was the third best of his career. He now has three of the top four single-game rushing totals in club history. He ran for a club-record 211 against Houston in 2005 and 201 vs. Cincinnati that same season.

--T Branden Albert left the game before halftime with what appeared to be a significant right elbow injury. The Chiefs said the starting left tackle had hyperextended his elbow, but he had to be carted slowly off the field so that a physician could immobilize the arm as he walked alongside.

--CB Brandon Carr got the first interception of his rookie career when he picked off Jay Cutler and returned the ball 32 yards.

--WR Dwayne Bowe had a season-high seven catches for 85 yards against Denver, his best outing since going 8-97 in a Dec. 23 loss at Detroit last year.

--K Nick Novak hit four of five field goals against Denver, missing from 48 after hitting from 23, 21, 43 and 33.

REPORT CARD VS. BRONCOS

PASSING OFFENSE: B-plus -- If grading on a curve, this would be an "A," as the Chiefs have had only two passer ratings higher than 69 among the three QBs they've used this year. Damon Huard has both. His 100.3 rating against Denver came because he made no mistakes in hitting 21 of 28 passes for 160 yards with a TD and no picks. He was sacked only once and stood tough in the pocket to make a couple of throws in the face of a fierce rush. Dwayne Bowe made some tough catches in a 7-85 day.

RUSHING OFFENSE: A -- Larry Johnson had breakaway runs of 65 (on his second carry), 34, 17 and 16 en route to his season-high 28 carries and 198 yards. The blockers gave him some nice holes, and LJ had some good cutback runs into a few of them. Kansas City kept the game close throughout, meaning it never had to abandon its running philosophy.

PASS DEFENSE: C -- Jay Cutler was never pressured in completing 29 of 49 passes for 361 yards. But he was picked off by LB Derrick Johnson and rookie CB Brandon Carr, and he managed only one TD pass, a slick throw to Brandon Marshall between two defenders. Kansas City also forced some key incompletions on red-zone throws in crunch time that made Denver settle for field goals when it needed touchdowns.

RUSH DEFENSE: B -- Denver never really established the running threat on its 22 carries. Kansas City was able to control things with a standard front seven, allowing its safeties to play back. The Broncos averaged 4.3 a carry, decent but not killing.

SPECIAL TEAMS: A -- First "A" of the year. K Nick Novak hit four of five field goals, and every point was important. His kickoffs were reasonably deep, and the Broncos had only one return exceed 30 yards. Rookie Dantrell Savage returned a kickoff 51 yards after a fourth-quarter Denver score to put the Chiefs in position to immediately offset it with one of their own. Jamaal Charles, also a rookie, averaged 29 yards on his two kickoff returns.

COACHING: A -- First "A" in a year. This ship was threatening to get grounded, but Herm Edwards kept it floating by convincing his players they could stay with point-productive Denver if they just held the Broncos to field goals instead of yielding touchdowns. He was right.
