Kansas City Chiefs Strategy and Personnel 2008-10-30
Shakeups continue on Kansas City's special teams.

After changing their kicker (from Nick Novak to Connor Barth) and hiring a new punter while Dustin Colquitt is fighting a groin injury, the Chiefs added a new long snapper Wednesday.

After putting long snapper John Phillipe Darche on injured reserve after he injured a knee last week against the Jets, the Chiefs signed Thomas Gafford, who spent time with Green Bay, Chicago and Seattle.

Kansas City also signed tackle Andrew Carnahan off the Jacksonville practice squad, where he has been since the 2007 season. The Chiefs released tackle Brian De La Puente.

PLAYER NOTES

--QB Quinn Gray likely will be elevated to the No. 2 QB spot behind Tyler Thigpen after spending just more than a week with the Chiefs. Gray made four starts among his 11 appearances with Jacksonville. His experience gives him an edge over Ingle Martin, who's had all of three snaps in a mop-up appearance with Tennessee.

--P Dustin Colquitt did not practice again Wednesday while nursing the groin injury that kept him from playing last week in the loss to the Jets. His status for Tampa Bay is truly questionable.

--RB Jamaal Charles was able to do some individual work in Wednesday's workout despite injuring an ankle after a career-long 25-yard run against the Jets. His status as the backup to No. 2 RB Kolby Smith, himself a backup to the inactive Larry Johnson, remains questionable.

--FS Jarrad Page did only limited work Wednesday while recovering from a groin injury. He likely will be available for the Tampa Bay game.

GAME PLAN: Despite Herm Edwards' public protests that the spread offense wouldn't be dependable as an every-down offense in the NFL, it may be the Chiefs best option against Tampa Bay. The Bucs can bring the pressure, no doubt, but getting receivers open in space may be Kansas City's best chance. They're not running effectively, so why not use the extended handoff philosophy of the spread.

Defensively, the Chiefs have to limit the running of Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn -- good luck, given KC's stature as the NFL's 32nd-ranked rushing defense -- and try to make Jeff Garcia beat them, which he's capable of doing. Still, KC's secondary got a shot of confidence last week when they intercepted Brett Favre three times, with rookie Brandon Flowers getting two, one for a touchdown.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: Bucs front seven vs. Chiefs spread. Tampa Bay can blitz corners and safeties effectively, and will, but it also can get the pressure it needs with its front four and linebackers. LDE Kevin Carter rushing against Chiefs RT Damion McIntosh or backup Herb Taylor will be a big Bucs advantage, as is LDT Chris Hovan against RG Adrian Jones. The Bucs will find Chiefs QB Tyler Thigpen more willing to take a sack in his third start than he was in his first when he threw three hurried picks against Atlanta.

INJURY REPORT: P Dustin Colquitt did not participate Wednesday and is truly questionable for the Bucs. Reserve CB Dimitri Patterson did not practice Wednesday (foot). Ditto with CB Pat Surtain (quad). RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) was limited Wednesday, but looks on the sunny side of questionable. FS Jarrad Page groin) worked in individual drills and likely will play.
