--The flagship station of the Chiefs' radio network, KCFX-FM, has fired long-time sideline reporter and pre-game host Bob Gretz and replaced him with former Chiefs long-snapper Kendall Gammon.
Gretz was a veteran NFL beat writer, having covered the Super Bowl Steelers and the Chiefs for newspapers in Pittsburgh and Kansas City, before accepting the radio job. As the host of the network's Carl Peterson Show, he sometimes took flak from fans and media for being overly supportive of Peterson and the team, which makes his removal from the radio network difficult to explain.
But during the Chiefs' nine-game losing streak of 2007, as the team sank further into decline, Gretz's sideline reporting became more realistically pointed. So, too, did that of Hall of Fame booth analyst Len Dawson, but the network could hardly remove the most beloved sports figure in Kansas City.
Gretz continues to work as a reporter/columnist for the team's Web site.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "He was so lucky Tony was there. It helped a lot that Tony's a big, strong guy because you have to be able to apply some pretty good pressure. I don't think I would have been strong enough to help him." -- Diana Martin, an employee at the southern California restaurant at which Tony Gonzalez performed the Heimlich maneuver that might have saved the life of a choking man."
