STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS

The Kansas City Chiefs have hired Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley as their new head coach, a source close to the situation told the Kansas City Star.

It was also unclear when the Chiefs would make the announcement. The team would not confirm his hiring.

Arizona advanced to the first Super Bowl in franchise history this season mainly on the strength of Haley's offense. Arizona finished third in the NFL in scoring, fourth in total offense and second in passing yardage. The Cardinals set a franchise record by scoring 427 points.

Haley began his coaching career in 1996 as an offensive assistant coach with the Jets. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli and Haley worked together in New York from 1997 to `99, Pioli as director of pro personnel and Haley as wide receivers coach.

Vikings promote O'Shea

Chad O'Shea, who has served as an offensive assistant with the Vikings since 2006, has been promoted to assistant special teams coach. O'Shea will move into the role previously held by Brian Murphy, who was promoted to special teams coordinator this week.

O'Shea's primary responsibilities with the Vikings had revolved around assisting wide receivers coach George Stewart, and he will continue to help in that area.

O'Shea previously helped with special teams while coaching with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2003 to `05. "He has a passion for it, he understands it, he's good at it," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "I don't want him to lose a voice with us on offense because he still has a passion on the offensive side, and he's as good as an assistant to George. ... I feel good about it."

Childress said he expects the special teams will "get a fresh perspective" with Murphy in charge. Vikings special teams gave up an NFL record seven touchdowns this past season under coordinator Paul Ferraro, who left to become the linebackers coach for St. Louis.

Childress, Vikings President Mark Wilf, linebacker Ben Leber and several members of the team's front office were in attendance at the University of Minnesota's Eastcliff Residence on Thursday night to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of the Vikings Children's Fund partnership with the university's department of pediatrics and children's hospital.

- Defensive end Kenechi Udeze, who missed last season after being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, is doing well and recently said his goal is to return for the Vikings' offseason program. Childress doesn't doubt Udeze will be back, saying: "Nothing that he does will surprise me. I expect him to get back and be there the first day of OTAs because that's his expectation."

- The Vikings signed cornerback Derrick Roberson to a reserve/futures contract. That means every player that ended the season on the team's practice squad now has been signed to such a contract.

Cassel gets franchised

The Patriots placed the franchise tag on Matt Cassel, making it tougher for other teams to sign the free-agent quarterback. The Patriots might keep him if they have doubts that Tom Brady will be ready for the start of next season after suffering a serious knee injury in the 2008 opener.

Etc.

- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell he was hopeful the league and Hawaii will reach a deal possibly by next week to bring the all-star game back to Honolulu. Sunday's Pro Bowl ends a 30-year run in Hawaii.

- Former Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn was arrested on public intoxication and marijuana possession charges after appearing disoriented at a hotel, police said in Irving, Texas.
